Assisted living is a type of care seniors and their families might not know much about. While it’s one of the most popular types of senior care, there are many myths about it. Some believe it is just a more attractive version of a nursing home, and others think you must be wealthy to afford it.
In honor of National Assisted Living Week, celebrated during the second week of September, we are shining the spotlight on this unique level of care.
5 Things You Should Know about Assisted Living
1. Residents are encouraged to be independent.
A popular misconception about assisted living is that residents give up their freedom. The reality is assisted living residents receive just the amount of assistance they require to safely remain independent. From medication reminders to assistance with bathing, caregivers are always nearby to lend a hand.
There are no set schedules either. Residents are free to plan their own days and do as they please.
2. Private apartments are standard.
Another concern for seniors is that moving to an assisted living community will forfeit their privacy. While it is a type of congregate housing, older adults have their own private apartment or suite. Residents can spend as much—or as little—time with neighbors and friends at the community as they choose.
3. Base monthly fees include housing, utilities, meals, and more.
Families sometimes think the price of an assisted living community is unaffordable until they learn more about what is included. The base monthly fee usually includes the senior’s private apartment, utilities, cable, housekeeping and laundry services, life enrichment and wellness programs, transportation, and well-balanced meals. These are in addition to services such as lawn care, snow removal, trash collection, and all maintenance and repairs.
4. Residents can be as active as they choose.
There is much to do at a typical assisted living community. Most host a wide variety of life enrichment and wellness programs every day. They can include activities such as arts and crafts, book clubs, musical entertainment, movie nights, religious services, chair yoga, swimming, and outings to local restaurants and shopping centers.
While many seniors enjoy participating in at least a few daily events, they’re not required. Residents are free to participate in as many or as few programs and events as they desire.
5. Pets are often welcome.
Assisted living communities are often pet-friendly. Many recognize that pets are family members, too. An older adult might not be willing to move unless their four-legged family member can join them in this next chapter in life.
Talk with staff at the assisted living communities you visit to learn about their pet policies. Most have limits on size, weight, and the older adult’s ability to care for the pet independently.
